Upcoming events: here, there & everywhere!

by on March 14, 2012

If you’re interested in supporting ovarian cancer awareness, you may be wondering what you can do. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start.

Have no fear, gentle reader – I’m here to help! There are many opportunities to get involved. Today, I’m going to highlight a few upcoming events and share one of my secrets for finding out what’s going on out there…

First, there are often 5K runs or walks to raise money and awareness. Marcy recently told you about some upcoming races in the northern Virginia and Denver areas. Are you in the New York area? Check out the EIF Revlon Run/Walk for Women on May 5, and join the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance to raise funds for its “Survivors Teaching Students: Saving Women’s Lives” program.  If you’re in Minnesota, get your diva on at the Spring Fling Diva Run in Rochester on April 29 to benefit the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance.

Looking for a race in your area? Leave a comment here or on the earlier post, and we’ll find the info for you!

However, races aren’t the only way to get involved. Here are some of the diverse and exciting events coming soon to a city (or computer screen) near you:

  • Mixing it up in Miami? There are a host of events on the Message from Marli Foundation website, including a girls’ night out party on March 22.
  • Live in Wisconsin? You can join the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance for its 3rd Annual S.O.S Party, a fundraiser to raise awareness about ovarian cancer. The event will be held on March 24 – for more info, click here.
  • Enjoying the sun in Orlando? Check out the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Florida’s Annual Teal Magnolia Luncheon on April 14.
  • Pennsylvania pals, this next one has me tempted to hop in the car for a road trip. David Sedaris is doing a reading, Q&A, and book signing to benefit Responsible Ovarian Awareness Required (R.O.A.R.) on April 17 in York, PA. Any other Sedaris fans out there? I’m so jealous right now.
  • Don’t worry, West Coast. I haven’t forgotten you. If you’re in West Hollywood, check out “Happily Ever Laughter” at The Comedy Store on April 26.
  • Have a computer? Check out this webinar on March 20 from the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance: “Frankly Speaking About Ovarian Cancer.”

You may be wondering how I found all of these events. My secret? The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance maintains a calendar where organizations from around the country can post upcoming events. Handy, right? If you’re wondering what other events are on the horizon, swing by and check it out.

Are any events happening in your community that you’d like to share? You can add it to the calendar at the link above.  If you share it with us in the comments (or by email at whisperingcrowns at gmail dot com), we’ll post it here as well.
